Here in the United States, we like to celebrate our mothers in the month of May. That's why May is a good time to remind all moms with gestational diabetes – and a history of gestational diabetes – about their lifelong risk for getting type 2 diabetes and the steps they can take to stay healthy.
Gestational diabetes is the type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. Most of the time, it goes away after your baby is born. Even if the diabetes goes away after your baby is born, you still have a greater chance of getting type 2 diabetes later in life, and your child from that pregnancy may have a greater chance of being obese and getting type 2 diabetes.
